Knots and Ties
Alice Tien

Mission statement
Knots and Ties is a sibling-centered design project that explores the threads of connection, communication, and co-creation between siblings. Through a therapeutic travel kit and interactive game elements, this project aims to strengthen sibling relationships by transforming everyday interactions into meaningful memories. Rooted in the values of empathy, play, and art therapy, Knots and Ties empowers siblings to navigate conflict, plan together, and rediscover each other through shared journeys.
Problem Space
Sibling relationships, though often foundational and lifelong, are frequently underexplored in design and therapeutic contexts. Many siblings struggle with maintaining meaningful communication, navigating conflict, and connecting as they grow older and lead separate lives. These challenges become especially evident during shared experiences like travel, where poor communication or unresolved tension can create friction instead of connection. There is a lack of engaging, emotionally supportive tools that help siblings strengthen their bond through co-creation, shared decision-making, and reflection in real-life contexts.

Story Time!!
It all started on a breezy afternoon. Two siblings stood side by side in an open field, watching their bright red kite dance against the sky. The wind tugged at it playfully, lifting it higher and higher, the string pulling taut between their fingers. They had painted it together—bold, vibrant, impossible to miss.
But then—snap!
The string broke.
In an instant, the red kite was gone, carried away by the wind, soaring higher and higher until it disappeared beyond the horizon. The siblings watched, frozen in shock, before turning to each other with the same thought—we have to find it.
And so, their journey began.

There are two versions of the travel planning book:
One is designed for siblings who enjoy adventure, humor, and spontaneous moments.
The other offers a more intentional, reflective experience, focusing on meaningful bonding and lasting memories.

Each postcard can be connected with string—symbolizing how siblings stay connected, just like the theme “Knots and Ties.”
