JUNK

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Junk is a DIY kit that explores the value of DIY culture and punk feminism in today’s socio-political climate.
Junk was created as a personal and political response to the system of capitalist over-consumption and the rampant resurgence of misogynist culture in our society. This kit is about creativity and resistance, the importance of feminism and DIY culture. With everything happening around us, rising alt-right misogyny, performative allyship and a growing discomfort with those who don’t conform, the act of sharing and creating something from discarded “junk” is resistance made tangible. Junk is meant to be imperfect; it’s messy, gritty, raw and expressive. The goal is to have users engage, question, make and in doing so, share what they have learned and created with their communities. The user will be provided the tools, information and other assets to form their own identity within DIY culture and the feminist movement. Junk urges conversations to be had and activism to be pursued in whatever way is right for the user.

BRANDING
Junk’s Visual Identity does not adhere to traditional branding guidelines, but rather focuses on DIY materials and making, while combining key elements that resemble the ethos of Punk Feminism
Primary Logo
Staying true to the essence of DIY culture, Junk’s one and only logo was created using DIY materials, compiled of pre-owned lettered beads, paper stars cut out of magazines and a safety pin. The items were scanned into digital format and then edited and designed to create an edgy, but fun logo that is easy to read and emulates the idea of crafting and creation.

Design Elements
The goal for the design elements was to have a variation that would convey the punk essence of Junk while simultaneously being playful and in tune with the message. In the process of creating these elements, the choice was made to not construct these digitally but rather, source them in a DIY way. Created out of pre-owned and DIY linocut stamps, the elements were stamped onto paper, scanned digitally and then rasterized to create the recurring assets.

Typography
Though there is no “set” form of typography within the branding for
Junk, but a few typefaces made multiple appearances, all of which carry the essence of punk and DIY.

Colour Palette
Similarly to the typography, there was no set colour palette as this would hinder the creation process for the project, as well as for potential users. However, a few colours do make a recurring appearance, these colours were selected to emulate Riot Grrrl culture, a punk-feminist movement in the 90’s, these colours were formulated in the early stages of this project.
