ILLUSTRATION

the adornments of story

In my illustration work, I place heavy emphasis on symbolism, soft textures, and compositions with many layers of meaning and/or a cinematic quality snapshotting life’s ephemeral moments which might once be sweet, then incredibly mundane, but are each integral to our stories.

Contact Me

is an artist, designer, and illustrator based between Abbotsford and Vancouver, BC.

Emma Rae’s studio practice examines one’s relationship to lived environments in dialogue with ecofeminist and post/minimalist theories through sewing, painting, and drawing. Graduating with a BFA with a major in illustration from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, her work is supplanted by a semester spent abroad at Paris College of Art studying fashion design and textiles in relation to premises of sustainability and textile craft as artistic practice. Born with a natural predilection toward all things art and fashion, her work is simultaneously rooted in her Dutch heritage and a rural upbringing on her family farm in Abbotsford, British Columbia, nurturing the foundation for a practice concerned with value, care, and environment.

Her illustration work, while a distinct practice of its own, likewise employs soft textures, an emphasis on wardrobe, symbolism, organic forms, and minimalist design choices which echo her oeuvre in both intention and design.
