The fabrication of textiles, drawing, and identity share a quality of accumulation. Knitting threads into sweaters; tracing lines into pictures; making memories into stories; weaving connections into webs. Though these accumulations reflect repetition, they may also reflect a quality of brokenness or fragmentation.

Cord-Maker is an exploration of the connections between thread, identity, lineage, and textiles.

Through the repetitive processes of drawing and printmaking, I wish to emulate the repetitive labour of textile-making, honouring my lineages and particularly the generations of women who gave their skill and time to the craft of textiles.

I am curious about the non-linear and tangled threads of time that live within and around us. How do these threads connect us with past versions of ourselves, our ancestors, and others before us?

Print Works: Etching

On growing one’s wings, transformations, and journeys.

An edition of Christmas cards I made for family and friends, inspired by winter’s patterns, shapes, and colours.

This etching was inspired by the lyrics: “stare at the stars, they’re the children of the sun and the moon,” by local folk group Po’Girl.

Observing the cycles around us, noticing how we all experience our own seasons, births, and rebirths.

Made by commission for my dear friend and musician, Aylah Jovanovski, for her song titled “kiss myself.”

Graphite Drawings

Depicting the bark of a willow tree, this drawing is the result of a two-month field study project conducted at Trout Lake park.

The layering of memories and the stories told by quilts.

Shanti’s art practice is a process of observation, reflection, connection, material creation, and storytelling. She is deeply fascinated with Earth’s patterns, interconnectedness, and cycles, with an understanding that we are a part of them too. Her observations ground her and guide her work, revealing narratives and synchronicities.
