Fantastical Stories

Charlotte Cho

See it On Campus: Level 2

A collection of works created to develop a portfolio geared towards children’s and middle grade books.

‘The Witch and the Rainbow Cat’,
‘The Snuff Box’
,
‘The Beast with a Thousand Teeth’
,
‘Why Birds Sing in the Morning’
, 2024
Watercolour + gouache

Interpretations of four short stories in Terry Jones’ “Fairy Tales and Fantastic Stories” collection.

These pieces marked the beginning of my exploration in interpreting text and also achieving a style with watercolour and gouache. New elements, including panelling and more types of decorative borders, unified these pieces into a series.

‘Tree Mail’, 2025
Digital (Procreate)

Page mock ups for both middle grade and children’s book versions of an original concept- a story of a little forest mail carrier and her carrier pigeon sidekick, Lump.

This story was used to explore both black and white full page images for middle grade novels and colour horizontal spreads intended for children’s books. Different aspects of storytelling were explored in order to convey a narrative in both one image and multiple spreads.

‘Between Backyards’, 2025
Watercolour

A horizontal full page spread mock-up for a children’s book.

This was a piece created from the heart as it was heavily inspired by my childhood days spent with my best friend and neighbour. The games and imaginary scenarios we cooked up are set in the alley between our houses where I’ve had some of my fondest memories.

‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Alt. Book Cover’, 2025
Watercolour + gouache

An alternative book cover for ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’.

This was an excellent project that led to explorations of adapting existing, well-known media. It was both challenging and fun to explore character design for figures that have been re-imagined time and time again. Figuring out how to translate the original text descriptions into my current style was an interesting process which involved bringing in new elements which complimented the core of each character.

‘Talking To My Mom’, 2025
Watercolour

A watercolour piece for my 2025 Illustration Anthology submission.

This painting moved towards more surreal imagery; trying to convey a more open ended piece rooted in imagination.

Charlotte is an illustrator who has grown up drawing in and around the city of Vancouver, Canada.
Within her illustration practice, Charlotte has explored a variety of media including digital work, acrylic paint, and graphite. Now, she particularly enjoys using watercolor and gouache with an earthy yet vibrant palette to bring her work to life. As Charlotte’s art practice has developed through the years, storytelling has always been a constant and driving theme of her work. She enjoys including details that reward those taking the time to really look, working with whimsical, quirky characters, and showcasing the gritty, papery texture that comes through in a traditional painting.

She now aims to create illustrations for young readers which cultivate the same love she had for reading while growing up. Learning, finding humor, and sharing an experience with others through a good story is what she finds important at the core of her practice.
