Project Statement
This piece, titled WoolieWonders, is a large-scale, articulated sheep sculpture, 3D printed
and assembled with a process reminiscent of taxidermy. It’s covered in bright pink faux fur,
and its face is adorned with a stylized, sewn-on mask. The materials include plastic and
fabric, blending digital fabrication with tactile craft showcasing the potential of 3D printing in
contemporary art-making at scale. The sculpture was developed as a technical and
conceptual test to push the boundaries of scale and interactivity in sculpture, using
accessible and modular tools, minimizing harmful products.
The sculpture explores the concept of the herd, the instinctual need to belong, to be part of
something larger. Both sheep and humans are deeply social beings, often shaped by their
groups, communities, and families. The sewn mask symbolizes how, in pursuit of belonging,
we often mold ourselves into versions that fit in, hiding parts of who we really are. It raises
the question of whether our sense of identity is something we carry inherently, or something
that is continuously shaped and reshaped by the environments and relationships we move
through.
While this wasn’t intentional at first, the piece ended up being a self-reflection. I come from a
tightly-knit herd of four. Moving to Vancouver split that in half, and now it’s just my brother
and me. This transition has brought up questions about identity and connection: where do I
belong in this new place? How should I act or look to fit in? The dissonance of being
physically present but emotionally in flux is something I navigate daily, and this sheep
became a kind of surrogate to hold those questions.
As part of the project, I’ve also envisioned making wearable masks, an invitation to others
who feel displaced or disconnected, especially those far from home or lacking close
relationships. The idea is to form a temporary herd, a shared space of empathy and
recognition, even if only for a moment. These masks are meant to be tools for dialogue,
performative elements that transform the viewer into a participant. They allow anyone,
regardless of origin or circumstance, to enter the shared space of the herd and feel seen,
even fleetingly.
