Memories & Love

Ruth L Major

Memories and love is an assemblage of childhood memories, memories of my mother and grandmother teaching me knitting, remembering the tea parties we had where we lived and the cross representing our faith.

As a whole it represents the love they had for each other, my mother buying my grandmother a china set and gifting the china to future generations. The knitted yarn strips display the connection between friends and family.

Breaking and making the holes into the china and the use of the red yarn represents the loss of these tea party occasions.

Memories and Love is also about the loss of my mom and grandmother.

Ruth L Major is a multi-disciplinary artist who was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, she is currently based in Vancouver, BC. Originally Ruth was a printmaker before attending Emily Carr, printing at Malaspina Printmakers, Granville Island.

She was printing there for a decade before applying to Emily Carr University of Art & Design. During her first years at Emily Carr Ruth was interested in pursuing photography, she was open to learning different ways of photographing, film processing and printing. Throughout her years at Emily Carr, Ruth has attempted many mediums including flexible material, biomaterials, book making, and fibre sculpture.

Ruth has previously completed a BFA in Photography at Emily Carr University of Art & Design in 2018. After graduation Ruth perused her photography passion for a year, although she was always intrigued and interested in painting and sculpture and that made the decision to return to Emily Carr for BFA in Visual Arts that much easier.

She now has a second degree from Emily Carr and is looking forward to her future endeavors. She will be returning to Malaspina Printmakers to revisit her love of printmaking.
