Home Is A Feeling

Ryah King

My parents were a major source of inspiration for me growing up. My mom introduced me to the world of magical girl power animated shows, and the joys of feeling empowerment in your talents. My Dad taught me to care and love the community I was raised in. As a result, I developed a love for creating colourful, animated stories inspired by my experiences growing up in one of the most vibrant diasporas of the world. I’m inspired by these lessons from my family and community, giving me the guiding belief in myself no matter where I am, and that things will work out in the end, even if it’s not the way you imagined. My film is about knowing yourself despite the world not knowing you very well, a patterned lived experience of mine, and creating a space where you can be yourself, remembering who you are.

A pink cat juggles the navigation of a new city but struggles when everything in the city feels like it’s against who she really is.

Ryah King is a Vancouver-based animator from Barbados. After receiving a Caribbean Academic scholarship, she decided to pursue her dreams of animation at Emily Carr University of Art + design in BC, Canada, after studying graphic design and 3D Animation In Ontario. Her main source of inspiration is the vibrant atmosphere of her lived experiences growing up in the lesser Antilles. Her favourite part of practicing digital media is using colour to portray feelings and create worlds that reference themes (that inspire her). She aims to become a Visual Development and Character Design artist, while honing her skills for creating more stories about her hometown someday.
