Designed to uplift—physically and emotionally.

Where it began

Élever (French for to lift or to uplift) is more than a chair—it’s a gesture of care. Initially designed for my grandmother, this outdoor lounge chair was created to support her in a way that felt both natural and beautiful. Many outdoor chairs are too low, too rigid, or clinical looking, making them difficult for the elderly to use. I wanted to design something that met her needs without sacrificing aesthetics, dignity, or comfort.

The story behind Élever’s design

The idea for Élever began with a simple but powerful observation: getting in and out of traditional lounge chairs can be challenging for certain people. I wanted to create a design that would gently assist movement without feeling mechanical or bulky. Inspired by the structure of a leaf spring, I designed a frame that flexes with the user’s motion, offering subtle support.

Using bent lamination techniques and steam bending, I shaped the wood into fluid, organic curves that are both strong and flexible. To reinforce this gentle motion, I incorporated a system of aircraft cable and springs, connecting the front legs to the back legs. This allows the chair to go up and down when sitting, while keeping the overall form light, clean, and intentional.

Built with Care

The frame is made from laminated ash, chosen for its strength, flexibility, and natural warmth. The slatted seat and backrest create a breathable, ergonomic sitting experience, perfectly suited for outdoor use. Every element of the design, from the flowing structure to the hidden mechanics, is focused on creating a supportive and visually timeless piece.

Bent Lamination

Élever is about more than physical elevation. It represents emotional support and a belief that thoughtful design can truly improve daily life. It’s a reminder that accessibility does not have to come at the expense of beauty and that every object we design carries the power to uplift, in every sense of the word.
