This tableau project is an exploration of on-location lighting and the creation of cinematic, staged imagery. I’m interested in moving beyond the studio and experimenting with curated spaces that tell a story in a single image. I was inspired by Petra Collins and Jeff Wall while creating these tableaus. In these images I explore the performativity of the female experience; how constructed environments can blur the line between reality and fiction. I’m particularly interested in how femininity is staged and how that can be reflected in a photo by using curated props, costume, and set design.

Sela J. Volk

Sela Volk is a photographer located in Vancouver BC. Her work typically focuses on storytelling, connection, and creating cinematic imagery from the “everyday”. Volk works on each session is with a strong focus on styling and building genuine connections with clients, allowing for a collaborative atmosphere where stories naturally unfold.
