These images are stills from my performance where I manipulate programmed visuals live. The visuals, and the music that I match the visuals to, are both created and composed by me.
Artist Statement
I am a new media artist working with sound, visual programming, and filmmaking to create abstract audio-visual experiences. The visuals I use are often a documentation of my own memories with others and the world. I then take these moving images and manipulate them to look dreamlike and unrecognizable at times. I also program visuals to create fluid, lifelike and ethereal forms. These pieces create something that is visually familiar, yet otherworldly, and sometimes incomprehensible, offering open-ended feelings of nostalgia, and representing the intertwining and blurring of the past, present, and future. The musical components that accompany my visuals evoke a dream-like state with occasional field recordings and my own voice singing and/or harmonizing. My music carries most of the emotion in what I create. Because of this, my visuals generally react to the sounds, enhancing the sensory experience and providing cohesion and flow. This is done either by creating audio-reactive visuals, or by manipulating my visuals live using TouchDesigner, a node-based programming software.
My work seeks to express on an emotional and experiential level, weaving a gentle dance between the sonic and visual worlds. Guided by intuition, I explore overlapping themes of alienation, nostalgia, loss, attachment, and new beginnings. My pieces act as vessels, carrying emotions I have never been able to articulate with words. Through these audiovisual extensions of myself, I hope to create connections with others and invite viewers to find their own meanings within the work. The soft, ambient nature of the sounds and visuals is intended to carry the viewer’s experience. Whether they connect deeply or only on the surface, my aim is to offer a duration where audiences can slow their busy minds, become present, and momentarily forget time, and the space they inhabit. The experience is not about following a perceptible narrative, but about meditating on personal connections and perceptions — because even without a prescribed narrative, there is always a story.
