Van Gogh Designs Furniture + Wood Design Graduation Award — Honourable Mention
How can design transform an object of necessity into an object of quiet confidence and beauty?
The design story begins with seniors who, despite their physical needs, found it difficult to accept using walking aids because of their clinical appearance, inspiring a more approachable and dignified design.

“I want something beautiful and gorgeous to mask my aging and weakness because I don’t feel beautiful anymore.”
“At first, using the cane felt very unwelcome because it announces to everyone that I’m getting old and weak.”
“I am looking for something younger, slightly more fashionable”
The project tackles the invisible but powerful emotional and social barriers that prevent seniors from using necessary support.

In doing so, it bridges the gap between physical necessity and psychological/societal acceptance, directly aligning with the diagram’s vision of holistic Wellness.

URI
A Beautiful Companion
URI is a beautiful piece of furniture that easily can be accompanied indoor allowing seniors to gain confidence through controlling over their environment independently, and also taking pride in using.

It’s an attempt to soften the boundary between function and emotion, to design not just for movement, but for the feeling of being seen and valued.

It emphasizes its role as a “transferrer” — a supportive companion in daily life — aiming to convey a positive message and shift away from the stigmatizing label of “disabled.”

This piece is meant to be a gentle companion — one that moves with them, supports them wherever they go, pauses when they pause, and most importantly, gives them a quiet sense of pride in using it.

Function
Tambour Table

The tambour table glides forward to provide a convenient surface for transferring items and easily slides back into place when the walker is in use.
Handle
The curved handle follows the natural shape of the hand, helping to position it comfortably and evenly distribute weight to reduce strain.

Stand up aid
The stand-up aid handle provides effective support when standing from a seated position, reducing arm strain by guiding the user to smoothly transition their hand to the main handle.

Replaceable wheels/ glide
The wheels and glides can be replaced or swapped with different types to better suit the user’s needs.
